Sample Itinerary

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport:

Our itinerary is designed to maximize your chance to get the best shots possible during your trip. Upon arrival to Arusha via Kilimanjaro Airport we will meet you at the airport for transfer to your hotel. Depending on the arrival time of your flight we may have time to explore town and some of the bustling markets before getting a good night rest after a long trip.

Olerai Lodge is set amidst an acacia grove against the backdrop of the stunning Mount Meru. The name “olerai” comes from the word “acacia” in the local Maa language. Here, visitors can begin their safari adventures immediately after check-in. Monkeys, porcupines, honey badgers, and a lot of stunning birds all call this area home.

Explore Tarangire National Park:

We will leave early on our first full day from Arusha to drive to Tarangire National Park. This park has a wide variety of animals but is most famous for its density of elephants and baobab trees. This is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa with several herds of up to 300 members per herd.

In addition, there are large numbers of impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle, the greater and lesser kudu and on rare occasions, the unusual gerenuk and fringe –eared Oryx are also seen. A few black rhinos are also thought to be still present in this park. You will obviously see big numbers of elephants gather here as well as the wildebeests and zebras. Among the other common animals in the Tarangire are the leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetah that seem to be popular within the southern open areas. The birds within the Tarangire are also quite many, there are over 545 species that have been identified here. The stunning yellow collared lovebirds and the shy starlings are in plenty here in addition to other species.

Here, we have the opportunity to experience a walking safari if wanted. The intimate feeling of being on foot is incredibly exciting.

Right in the middle of this fantastic park. tucked into a grove of secluded riverside bush, this lodge is so much at one with the wild that animals hardly look up as they pass. Elephants often walk through camp and the lions’ roar can be heard. The views out over the wilds of Tarangire National Park are magical – especially at sunset.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area:

Surrounding the ancient volcanic caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater, this region is rich with unique wildlife habitats. This will also be a great opportunity to visit local tribes to view and photograph ancient traditions still being practiced today.

Our first full day will be exploring inside the caldera with the possibility of photographing black rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, lions, gazelles, hyenas, flamingos, grey crowned cranes, and many other species. This unique habitat is unlike any in Africa and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site status. A well-groomed network of roads crisscrosses the caldera allowing us to explore the multiple habitats inside the crater.

Day 2 will focus on the rich cultural sites located in the region. Our morning will be spent with the Hadzabe tribe where we will have the opportunity to get an inside look at one of Africa’s last remaining nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes. Our focus will be education about a disappearing way of life, intimate tribal portrait photography, and the possibility of photographing a hunt. After lunch, we will visit another tribe famous for jewelry making and crafts. With our hearts full and memory cards maxed out, we will head back to the lodge for a relaxing evening where our expert photographer will lead a discussion on cultural and wildlife photography.

When it’s time to head to camp, we will follow one of the world’s most stunning private drives, bringing you up to a dizzying edge of elemental Africa with panoramic views spinning forward into the Crater and back to the Serengeti plains. This is much more than a great vantage point for visiting the Crater; this is where we live the Ngorongoro life.

Fly to Eastern Serengeti:

This secluded area of the eastern Serengeti is a haven for big cats. For 20 years, the grasslands surrounding Namiri Plains were closed off to people and tourism, this was done to encourage and support the growth of declining cheetah populations. This decisive action led to the plains now being known as a haven for cheetahs. These fast felines roam the plains freely and are thriving. Each night we will set an agenda for the following day based on what remaining wildlife shots you will want before leaving Tanzania. Our days will start at sunrise, catching both the blue and golden hours of the day for incredible lighting. Lunch will be packed to enjoy under the shade of a tree in the bush while we watch the wildlife roam the landscape.

Namiri Plains is one of Africa’s best locations for observing big cats. Located in the vast and remote grasslands of the eastern Serengeti, Namiri Plains provides a tranquil and secluded retreat within a wildlife-rich environment. This was the first safari camp in the area, our guides are the custodians and know these grassy plains the best, sharing the most profound connections to the wildlife and innate respect for this precious ecosystem.

Fly to Northern Serengeti:
[June-November Itineraries]

Located between the Central Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve to the north, the Northern Serengeti is a remote African wildlife wonderland. The vast, rolling savannah of the Northern Serengeti is known as the hub of the great migration. The landscape is characterized by vast stretches of savannah interspersed with acacia trees and riverine woodlands. Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and visitors can view the annual spectacle of the half a million migrating wildebeest. Commonly spotted wildlife includes a multitude of plains game such as buffalo, zebra, gazelles, impala, giraffe as well as lion and leopard. Visitors can look forward to bird watching, hot air ballooning, game safaris and guided bush walks.

Olakira Migration Camp is a seasonal tented camp that moves across Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park with the wildebeest and zebra of the Great Migration. This intimate set of 9 stargazing tents is the perfect gateway to this wildlife spectacle. Your stay will take in either of the migration’s highlights, the river crossings in the north between June and October and calving season on the southern plains from December until March. Spend your days on game drives and hot air balloon safaris and your nights sleeping in the mesh-covered stargazing tents.

Fly to Arusha and enjoy a stay at Olerai Lodge:

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Arusha, Olerai Lodge offers a tranquil retreat to unwind and prepare for your adventure. Experience luxurious accommodations with modern amenities, beautiful gardens, and stunning views of Mount Meru. Savor gourmet dining at the lodge’s restaurant, relax by the pool, or take a leisurely stroll through the serene grounds. This peaceful oasis ensures you are well-rested and ready for the exciting days ahead.

Departure Day:

As your adventure concludes, it’s time to depart. Take all your incredible photos and unforgettable memories home to enjoy and share with loved ones.
