Steven Ngowi was born on the southern slope of Kilimanjaro and spent his entire life close to the bush and the wildlife in it. From age 6, his grandfather, safari guide Steven, raised him inside the safari life.
Both spent quite a bit of time with groups of professional British photographers who relied on Steven Sr.’s skill and expertise to help capture the images they sought. Ndifo means “Footsteps” in Steven’s native language, Chagaa. Steven’s dream has always been to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, his ndifo.
Steven’s whole life has been dedicated to safari. It is an integral part of who he is. As the owner and lead guide of Ndifo Safari, he brings this specific knowledge and connection to all his guests. As a native Tanzanian who loves and appreciates the wild world around him, his focus for Ndifo is conservation and preservation of the natural gifts given to our care. That ideal helps form the cornerstone mission of our company.

We spent a few weeks with Steven in Rwanda and Tanzania. It was an amazing trip. Had two days with the Silverback and one day with the Golden Monkeys in Rwanda and the rest of the time in Western Serengeti and the Crater. He was very knowledgeable and provided a great education about the area. Would go back soon!!! Highly Recommend Ndifo and Steven!!!!!!
I didn’t realize how important it was to choose a safari guide and company who in addition to being steeped in the history, ecology, knowledge of animals and their habitats, speaks great English and had a great sense of humor. We booked with Ndifo & asked them to just tell us the best of what we could see in the time that we had. I didn’t know where to even start with such a plan, so they planned out this fantastic itinerary for us & we saw things that just blew our minds! I’m so grateful that they knew what they were doing; it could’ve ended up being a bust, but in retrospect I see we picked the right company – thank goodness!
I’ve traveled 35+ countries including other safari experiences and this was the best. The difference was Steven’s caring personal style—of people and wildlife—and family experience through his family. Rwanda’s rebirth, gorillas and Tanzania Serengeti were unforgettable, but there’s no other team I’d recommend for this experience.
We had a number of different guides during our trip to Tanzania at different locations throughout the country. Stevie (Ndifo owner and guide) was by far and away the best and it wasn’t close. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Tanzania and answered every question we threw at him. Not to mention he’s also a delight to be around. Highly recommend!
