• Well over a hundred hours of supervised time in the field

Only after all of that is a guide certified to walk a client safely past an elephant, a lion, or a buffalo. Very few guides in the region ever complete it.

Meet the Guide Behind Ndifo Safari

At Ndifo Safari, our owner and lead guide is one of the guides who did complete it: Steven Ngowi.

His expertise isn’t something he picked up in a season. Steven was born on the southern slope of Kilimanjaro and grew up in the bush from the age of six, mentored by his grandfather — a working safari guide who spent years guiding professional British wildlife photographers.

Steven followed him into camp after camp, learning to track, to read weather and animal behavior, and to understand the land the way only someone raised in it can.

That apprenticeship is also where the company’s name comes from. Ndifo means “footsteps” in Steven’s native Chagga language — a nod to the path his grandfather set him on, and the one he now leads guests down himself.
